Eyelid surgery

«I look always tired, although I am very fit»
«I have bags under my eyes»
«My sagging eyelids bother me when I put on make-up»

Eyelid surgery is a simple intervention that brings immediate and extremely rewarding results for the patients.

It gives a brighter, more open look and eliminates the tired and sad-looking appearance about which patients frequently complain. The technical progress in the last years allows obtaining a more natural result with fewer complications. This intervention may concern only the upper eyelids, only the lower eyelids or the four eyelids.

Dark circles and hollowness under the eyes give a sad-looking and tired face, even when one feels perfectly well. This can be reduced by micro-lipofilling, a procedure whereby fat micro-particles are injected to give back volume to the areas that appear hollow. This technique, called under-eye lipofilling, can be used also to fill in facial wrinkles, hollows and lines. Moreover, fat injections improve the skin quality through the regenerative effect of stem cells that are naturally present in our fat (biostimulation).

Eyelid surgery (called blepharoplasty) is perfect to give to your eyes a fresh and radiant appearance!

FREQUENT QUESTIONS (UPPER EYELIDS)

Please, remember that only a consultation with a plastic surgeon can give you personalized information.

This intervention removes the surplus skin and protruding fat bag that give to the eyelids a «heavy», «thick» appearance. This simple intervention is often enough for correcting the tired eye expression. Several techniques – sometimes associated – can be proposed in function of the identified problem and the patient’s aspirations. Your plastic surgeon will carry out a complete assessment to determine the better option for you. Practically, a good result must be natural, without obvious signs of surgery.

WHICH KIND OF EXAMS ARE REQUIRED BEFORE THE INTERVENTION?

A blood test will be performed to assess your blood coagulation. A standard eye examination is carried out before this intervention.

WILL I HAVE A SCAR?

The incision is done in such a manner as to place the scar in the natural fold of the eyelid, thus making this scar invisible.

WHAT KIND OF ANAESTHESIA IS REQUIRED?

Most often local anaesthesia will be used with or without infusion. It may be general.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE?

About 30 minutes for the two upper eyelids.

About 1 hour for the four eyelids.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO STAY AT THE CLINIC?

Few hours (ambulatory intervention: admission in the morning and departure a few hours after the intervention).

WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK?

Six to eight days after the intervention. However, you recovery time depends on the natural healing capacity of your body.

WILL I FEEL PAIN AFTER SURGERY OF THE UPPER EYELIDS?

Normally there is no pain after this intervention.

MUST I STOP DOING SPORT?

Physical activities should be avoided for two weeks.

DO I HAVE TO STOP SMOKING BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTERVENTION?

Smoking can increase the risk of infection of the respiratory tract and can slow down the healing process. If you smoke, we will ask you to reduce or stop smoking in the weeks before and after the operation.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS (LOWER EYELIDS)

Please, remember that only a consultation with a plastic surgeon can give you personalized information.

As times goes by, fat pockets can develop in the area of the lower eyelids that make your eyes look baggy and tired. In most patients, surplus skin in the lower eyelid is minimal and does not need to be removed; only the protruding fat will be eliminated. A little incision hidden in the inner part (mucosa) of the eyelid allows the easy removal of the surplus fat («transconjunctival blepharoplasty»).

This is a very common intervention that does not leave any scar on the skin and healing is usually fast. In the rare cases when surplus skin also must be removed, the incision is done under the implantation line of the eyelashes, which makes the scar rapidly very inconspicuous.

During this operation, the skin and the muscle of the lower eyelid are tightened and the fat pocket is removed. Your plastic surgeon will carry out a complete assessment to determine the better option for you. Practically, a good result must be natural, without obvious signs of surgery.
